Ferrri's newest supercar will be named the F12, rather than the 620 as widely reported.
One thing about a Ferrari, it’s able to make a fast turn, and apparently that applies to the Italian automaker itself, which has delivered a surprise today, announcing that its newest supercar will be named the Ferrari F12, rather than the 620 as widely reported.
One key detail hasn’t changed, however: the new super GT will be the fastest and most powerful automobile ever to wear the prancing pony badge. Its 6.3-liter V12 will be able to launch the Ferrari F12 from 0 to 60 in about 3 seconds – with a top speed of more than 310 mph.
GM – Peugeot Announce “Broad-Scale” Alliance
The replacement for the Ferrari 599 will land in an increasingly crowded supercar market that will feature the likes of the new McLaren MP4-12C and the Lamborghini Aventador, so the opportunity to deliver anything but extreme performance will be minimal.
Of course, Ferrari will also put a premium on luscious Italian styling, an advantage it figures it can leverage over the incredibly competent McLaren. But form, here, is also supposed to enhance function. And the new F12 will feature a new concept dubbed Aero Bridge that generates additional downforce by funneling air flowing over the hood to its flank.
Then there’s the Active Brake Cooling system, which uses active vanes to guide air, when needed, through ducts to improve brake performance.
Dodge Confirms New Viper Debuting in NY
While there may be subtle visual similarities to the outgoing 599, the Ferrari F12 is a completely new car, the maker insists, with an all-new chassis that features a slightly shorter wheelbase. The engine, seats and other key components have been lowered to improve the center of gravity.
Ferrari also concentrated on lowering the new supercar’s overall weight, which comes in at 3,355 pounds, about 155 less than its predecessor. That helps enhance acceleration, handling – and fuel economy, which is reportedly 30% better than the old Ferrari 599.
Last-Minute Delay on New Backup Camera Rules
Under the hood: a naturally-aspirated, 6.26-liter V-12 making 740 horsepower and 509 lb-ft of torque. The maker says that will propel it to 100 kmh (62.5 mph) in 3.1 seconds, with 200 kmh (125 mph) in 8.5 seconds, with the top speed 340 kmh. The F12 reportedly cut something on the order of 2 seconds off the laptime record for a production car at the Fiorano race circuit, at 1:23.
By comparison, the old 599 made 611 horsepower.
We should get a closer look at the new Ferrari F12 at next week’s Geneva Motor Show.

I want to see the race between this and the Bugatti Veyron. Hehehe....
How about mileage....with gas approaching 5 bucks a gallon.....one cannot be too frugal......the carbon footprint on this thing has got to be the size of a schoolbus and every two seconds........besides the already over crowded Autobahn in Germany (espcially the parking lot that it becomes every summer)......where the hell are you going to go 310 mph for any extended period of time.....at that rate you can drive from Paris to Zurich in two hours.....
I'll take 4 in different colors please.
Mileage? You think Ferrari owners care about gas prices?
It's like being mad it costs $100 to get your Rolex cleaned.
even at 193 mph you can still drive from Paris to Zurich in two hours with the help of about 80 gallons or $700 worth of fuel of course......BTW...I throw my Rolex in the dishwasher.....costs nothing..........all this car will do for you is probably improve your sex life (chick magnet)......and who needs that?
I doubt it'll be as easy to drive at top speed than the Veryon. But you get what you pay for, and I bet the Ferrari is a bit cheaper.
Actually 340 km/hr is only 211 mph. How ho hum!
Can't we kidnap a Ferrari designer and force them to make a new Corvette?
Why are Italian cars so damn awesome looking?!!
I doubt carbon footprint is a concern for those who already lined up to buy that car. A bunch of climate change-denying zillionaires, rap stars and emirs from Saudi Arabia and the UAE. That said, what a beautiful car! I would feel too guilty to buy one even if I had the means, but if someone wants to offer me one, I won't say no.
"Its 6.3-liter V12 will be able to launch the Ferrari F12 from 0 to 60 in about 3 seconds – with a top speed of more than 310 mph. "
"The maker says that will propel it to 100 kmh (62.5 mph) in 3.1 seconds, with 200 kmh (125 mph) in 8.5 seconds, with the top speed 340 kmh."
340 kmh is 211 mph, NOT the 310 mph claimed in the 2nd paragraph of the article.
with a top speed of more than 310 mph.
Birdpilot, they didn't say 310 Km/hr.
Too bad Montana reinstated the speed limit.I know some nice lonely strectches of Interstate there.
I can't believe half of you believe that this car goes 310 mph!!! it's a typo! its actually 310 kmh which is over 200 mph. so dont get your hopes up about a veyron killer.
To those that mention the price of gas… The price of gas is completely irrelevant to the people that can afford such cars.
Looks similar to the Daggar GT.
Maybe the GM workers will use that $ 7,000 bonus as a down payment on one of these beasts which probably costs around $175,000 or more.
Or maybe they will go for one of those electric vehicles in Finland (supported by American taxpayer $$$) which costs around $ 100,000.
Ido: I wish, $175K - this thing will be a 1/2 mil at least, probably more!
Barry and Sleepy Joe can have their Volt (although it's doubtful either one will honor their promise to buy one), I want this car... and I bet Barry and Joe will get one before I do!
310 mph!! That's great! I could get to work in only 2.32 minutes!!! I'll take it!
I was getting ready to say. On 711hp you aren't doing 310mph. The Veyron has 1000hp with 4 turbos to get to 251mph.
That's nice but will the top go down? I like 200 mph wind in my hair......what's left anyway.
Very nice work Ferrari. Now whens the F-12 body kit for the Smartcar come out ?
I'm just glad to see a "proper" car making a comeback. Rear wheel drive, front mounted engine, long hood, short rear deck...
Ahaaa .... life is good again. The bee's are buzzing, the birds are singing and God is the heavens - Order is restored.
Typo, no way 740hp will push a car to 310 mph. 310 kph seems low so probably more like 210 mph.
310 kph (kilometers per hour) = about 193 mph (miles per hour).
340 kph = about 211 mph. Easily possible with 740 horses.
At the start of the article it says 310 mph ("...with a top speed of more than 310 mph.") and then at the end it say 340 kph "... with the top speed 340 kmh.") - these are far from the same thing, so which is it?!?! My guess is that the 340 kph is closer to reality. I seriously doubt any street legal car is going to hit 310 mph.
typo. 340 kph ~= 210 Mph
I'm pretty sure the top speed is 340 kph (211 mph), as this speed (mentioned at the end of the article) corresponds to a speed of roughly 210 mph which is one digit off from what the author mentioned at the start of the article. Not to mention, 310 mph is completely impossible for a street car of any kind.
Unfortunately, this is par for the course when it comes to journalism nowadays. I can't remember the last time I read an article on one of the major national news websites that didn't contain at least one typo or factual error. Whatever happened to editors?
Over 100 mph... horsepower is secondary - if the aerodynamics are correct. Recently one of the first V-8 engines every produced for the mass market... a flathead ford ... joined the 300 mph club on the bonneville saltflats.
Granted, it was a streamliner, purpose built for Salt flats running, but it weighed in at nearly 5,000lbs and was producing 'only' around 500 horsepower.
Its the aerodynamics which matter at top end, you only need big horsepower - if the car has to move a lot of air instead of letting it flow around the car.
Its possible that 300 can be done - its just a matter of fuel, open ground and Brass ones dangling, clanging when you walk.
Note: however... I do agree that Automotive writing has seriously been found lacking in the last 20 years or so. Its as if the main critera is whether they can meet the deadline - rather than is factual, is it well written and are there any blatant mistakes, spelling errors, syntax errors, subject errors.
We gave school kids hand calculators - 10 years later, no once can do simple math in their head any more. Gave them computers - no one can do basic research, fact checking anymore...
Top speed will be about 220 mph. NOT 310 mph. And that 340 kph. NOT kmh.
You have to wonder if any of these "news" organizations have Editors any more!!!
Garrick
To correct someone you should know that not all the world uses the American way of creating acronyms. Kilometers per hour is kmh from k=kilo=1000 and m= meters and h=hour, (kph would be something like kilopascals, which by the way is kPa)
340KM= 211 MPH, not 310MPH. Just a correction.
I saw the same thing.
I'll still take one! LOL
The 458 Spider is better looking, but yes, I would take one too.
SI
I agree, the 458 Italia is the best looking Ferrari out there, and one of the best looking cars ever in my opinion. But I think this F12 is an improvement over the 599 in every way. I never thought the 599 was that great to look at. This is much nicer. I took the 458 out for several laps on the Vegas Speedway with Exotics Racing. Highly recommend it... great experience!
and where would u drive a car that fast-no where- so what's the point?
on the NJ parkway at night with no headlights while wearing night vision goggles.
Yeah, 310 MPH would require a LOT more horsepower.
Never say never...! flathead engine, 300 ~miles / hours, only 600 ~horsepower.... it's good for more, if the salt is right.

310 KPH...
200 MPH...
Make up your mind. Is the top speed 310mph or 340kph? They aren't even close to one another.
And for jim1235 and Rob-306572, you can get a rubber band powered vehicle to 310 mph if you gear it right. But you were right that 340 kph is closer to 210 mph. It is actually 211.28 mph. And this puts the F-12 pretty much in line with Jaguar's C-X75 which isn't in production yet and is fully electric.
It doesn't matter how you gear it if you don't have the hp to overcome drag.
It would take a really BIG rubber band to overcome the aerodynamic drag generated at that kind of speed. Gearing has nothing to do with it.
Based on the reported top speed of 340kmh, the top speed in English units is over 210mph, not over 310mph as stated in the article. Conversion factors not withstanding, that's a darn fast car. Come on PowerBall, daddy needs a new car!
Just gonna point out that the "Aero bridge" and "Active Brake Cooling" are nothing new, they are just race technologies now being applied to street cars. And the Veyron (and probably lots more examples, probably at least one Lamborghini, Koeniggsegg, etc. ) already has several active aerodynamics touches, including vents that can open or close to cool the brakes as necessary, a.k.a active brake cooling.
And, the point is?
Oh yea.... my pinto is quicker..just rear end it and i'll propel forward at lightning speed!
Like they said...210.8 mph. Wow!! 310 would be a real quantum leap.....
Fiat asked these guys to help with the new Viper, can't wait to see what they do there.
I thought the Viper platform was bought wholesale from the Chrysler Group by Devon Motor Works, based in Grand Rapids Michigan, in 2009. Not affiliated with Fiat. Did it get resold?
I have some buddies at Chrysler who work in the Viper group (I'm at Fiat) so I assume Chrysler still owns it.
Ah, so it never got sold in the first place? *Edit* Yeah, a quick search shows that the sale never did happen. The video game where I got my information from shall remain nameless haha.
Oh, also, the description of "Aero bridge" is suspect, because if the air flowing OVER the hood is directed DOWN along the flanks of the car, it would produce lift on the front end, not downforce. Of course, if the air flow is actually going up the hood, into those obvious intakes and then along some hidden channels to the rear of the car, where it is then forced upwards again, then it could be producing some additional downforce. Guess I gotta find me some pics of the rear end of this Ferrari. I suspect a translation problem somewhere.
I think you are right "Prancing Pony" LOL!
Even if it will make 400 Miles per hour, doesn't matter, what it matters is that if you own one, you buy it for the potential or the idea that it can go that fast, only the idiots that run the car magazines will probably take it to the extremes and come back with some lame comments that are irrelevant.
You can go and get a Camaro or a Mustang that are really fast, or a Corvette, and you will pick fat chicks from Dennys or the waffle house with any of them, with a Ferrari you will park it on valet and the valet attendant will open the door for you and the hot model look alike female that is riding along or like one female friend that I have that owns a Lambo, she likes it because of the looks that she gets while in the car and when she exits.
The Veyron will kick it's hairy Italian butt.
True, but the Veyron also costs 4 times as much. Put $1.5M into the performance of this car and I assure you that it will blow the doors off the Veyron.
Besides, they're both Italian so they both have hairy butts
Bugatti was originally an Italian car but it's built in Germany by a conglomerate put together by VW.
JusBidenMyTime-
No one buys a Ferrari with regards to their carbon footprint or gas mileage... Although based on highway fatality rates for a car like this, it would actually decrease a person's carbon footprint because they would likely kill themself, thus decreasing their annual carbon output!!
At speeds over 150 - 200 mph... the fatality rate is easy to figure - 100%. After 200 mph, you can't be sure - the driver could have walked away, since the only evidence left would likely be a wet spot in what every you can find of the seat. Not sure if the decelleration causes loss of bladder control or the joy of watching the numbers roll past 250...
You could probably take the seat belt off and still be glued to the seat ... the pucker factor creates enough vacuum to keep you in place.
Just another toy for the rich and famous who get their moolah from us. No doubt any one of those %$&*$# who own this car will most likely buy 2 or more. Then whine to their goverment insiders that they pay too much in taxes. Then turn around and tell us that minimum wage is too good for us all.
Really? That's your take-away from this article? Socialist.
It looks kind of like a mix of Corvette parts. The fenders look like '70s 'Vette fenders. The grille looks like '60s, hood looks like new 'Vettes. I'm not saying they did it on purpose. Just an observation.
Ill take two
Am I the only one that knows that "the top speed 340 kmh" is not 310 MPH. More like 210 MPH.
Either a big typo or the author does not know what he is talking about.
You, and about 100 other posters who also caught the typo.
I'm confused? Does it have a top speed of 310 mph or 310 kph. Then in the middle its says it tops out at 340 kph. Are there any editors left at MSNBC or the Detroit Bureau?
---
It is probably the best styled Ferrari in a very long time. So who really cares how fast it goes. And by the way the 5,000 mile service interval is $12,500 plus parts.
my 4 cyclinder 1977 MG will go from 0-60 kph in 5 minutes and another 1 hour to hit a max of 80 kph.....it's a cream puff...and will always come in last but its first in my books :) ...
I see a bumper sticker on a van on my walk to work each day which reads: "Don't laugh, it's paid for." Keep that MG! :-)
