Celeb real estate: Oprah lists NYC penthouse

By Erika Riggs, Zillow

What's up in the world of celebrity real estate? Oprah -- or buddy Gayle King -- is selling a modern penthouse, and Patricia Arquette sold her home for a loss.

Neat as a pin? Has anyone actually lived here?

In the world of celebrity real estate, stars buy homes through trusts in LLCs in an effort to cut the paper trail leading to their name.

Despite their best efforts, it's possible to figure out who the real owner of a mansion or penthouse is with a little sleuthing.

Such is the case with a posh Manhattan penthouse for sale. In 2008, it was reported that former news anchor and Oprah Winfrey's best bud Gayle King bought a 3-bedroom, 3.5-bath apartment in the new Midtown tower Place 57.

After all was said and done, it appeared that the home was not purchased by King, but by the talk show diva herself for $7.1 million.

Who actually lived there is up for debate, but as for now, the penthouse is for sale for $7.9 million and appears to be vacant.

Finished in 2006, Place 57 has condos from $1.47 million to $7-plus million. Oprah's penthouse sits on the 36th floor and features 2,530 square feet of wall-to-ceiling windowed space as well as a 768-square-foot terrace.

The modern space features a "triangle-shaped" living room, high-end kitchen, dining area, and two bedrooms, one with an attached bathroom. The master suite has three walk-in closets, a jetted tub and sleek shower.

Patricia Arquette sells vine-covered home

Fair to call this house ivy league?

You'd think a "Medium" could have predicted the market better.

Celebrity real estate, like regular real estate, usually hits the market in the aftermath of divorce proceedings.

Patricia Arquette and former husband Thomas Jane listed their home for sale in Mid-Wilshire, Los Angeles after they announced their divorce. First listed on the market in June 2011, Arquette's home recently sold for $2.775 million — 20 percent less than the original asking price, according to the Real Estalker.

Arquette, best known for her role in TV's "Medium," which aired 2005 through 2011, purchased the vine-covered home in 2003 with Jane for $2.25 million. Arquette and Jane — of TV series "Hung" — were married in 2006, they divorced in late 2010.

Built in 1929, Arquette's former home is a stucco "Rennaisance Revival" home covered in vines and filled with 1920s details. The 4-bedroom, 5-bath home has hand-painted ceilings and stained glass windows as well as chef's kitchen with inlaid limestone tile. Situated on a one-third acre lot, the home also has a pool and outdoor living area with barbeque.

Why does anyone need a 7.9 million dollar house and why do you need to keep it quite?

She needs to keep it quite because she is filthy rich. Big time 1 percenter. And an adamant Obama supporter. See the inherent contradiction?

    #1.1 - Fri Feb 24, 2012 11:30 AM EST

No contradiction. She came from nothing, worked and built an empire that employed thousands of people. She did not put companies into bankruptcy, kicked workers out of jobs and send jobs overseas to make a buck. She make her money honestly and is the truly a real example of the "American Dream". I see nothing wrong with her spending her money that she worked for anyway she pleases.

As for her being an Obama supporter. What the heck does that have to do with anything?

Are you kidding? We all wish we had that kind of money to buy and then sell a place like that? She is an example of what hard work and kind deeds do in our capitalistic world! And it is quiet because she does not want the lookie loos knocking on her door!!! And there are no republicans living this life style? Why does it always have to be political?

    jackjr:

Are you familiar with NY real estate? This price is a relative bargain for a 36th floor penthouse. No one needs to pay this much, but if you have the money and want to live there, that is the going rate.

All the rich are selling in advance of the 2012 end of the world... so they can get tickets onboard the secret ships. :-)

I have my ticket- despite what the movie shows, they are allowing the workers who help build it go also.

Is that a laminate countertop? Sheesh...

        Reply#4 - Fri Feb 24, 2012 1:00 PM EST

I doubt it. It's probably soapstone. Or maybe concrete - although concrete is usually thicker.

          #4.1 - Fri Feb 24, 2012 1:27 PM EST

It looks EXACTLY like the counter I just put in a rental house occupied by college kids. Bought it at Lowes. Those sharp edges have me thinking it is not a stone product, since they are usually rounded or beveled. I just can't believe anyone would pay that much money and have such a plain kitchen. Oprah needs a new Realtor.

I don't understand why the Arquette sale was a loss. Yeah - less than asking, but sold for $500K more than they paid for it. :-( They should be in my shoes. If I had to sell today, I'd be taking a $250K bath (or my lender if they would take a short sale).

Nope, sorry. Don't like. Sure large windows, and looking at what? a Uban Jungle and very close may I add, so forget privacy. View is what, not artsy buildings but just your square blocks, no statue of liberty, no washinton bridge, just urban jungle. Pass.

I you pay me $7.1 million I might consider moving to NYC - but don't count on it.

If you were as filthy rich as Oprah you too would have a lavish place to live. For those of you above, quiet is spelled like this, (q u i e t) not like this, (quite). With spelling inabilities like that you don't deserve a place like Oprah's. So be quiet and shut the hell up.

I'd rather have the Arquette house, which is bigger (and cheaper), than the Oprah apartment.

I prefer Arquette's home as well but the bedroom is just a tad garish.

Well, I doubt our http://www.manhattan-condos-for-sale.com/ real estate broker will be showing us Oprah's property being that it's way above our budget. However I have to add that while we have a fraction of the budget to spend, some of the views that we have been seeing are more open that what she had/has, so I am kind of surprised about that.
