A man opens the passenger door of a Jeep Wrangler on display at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show. Chrysler's November sales rose 45 percent, helped by strong sales of its Jeep brand.
Automakers, including Chrysler, GM, Ford, Toyota and Nissan reported healthy sales gains in the U.S. last month in a good sign for the overall economy and consumer demand.
The results underscore projections that Americans bought new cars at the fastest pace in more than two years as they replace aging cars. Analysts expect that the annual sales rate for November could range between 13.3 million and 14 million cars and trucks. That is far better than the rate of 12.6 million through the first 10 months of the year.
November sales also could approach the 14.1 million annual rate from August of 2009, when the government offered big rebates for drivers to trade in their gas-guzzling clunkers.
Chrysler led the pack with a 45 percent jump in sales it attributed to strong demand for its Jeep vehicles.
2:07 p.m. EST: Toyota said its U.S. sales rose 7 percent in November, boosted by the introductions of new models and improved dealer inventories.
Toyota's sales have suffered in the months since the March earthquake and tsunami in Japan, which resulted in parts shortages that limited how many vehicles it could build.
Toyota sold a total of 137,960 new cars and trucks, up from 129,317 in the same month last year.
Car sales rose 18.8 percent, as sales of the Prius hybrid, including its new Prius V model, increased by nearly half and Camry sales, including its new gas and hybrid versions, jumped 13 percent.
Truck sales fell 5.4 percent, as sales of nearly every model fell.
12:33 p.m. EST: Ford said its U.S. sales rose 13 percent in November, as higher sales of trucks and sport utility vehicles countered a decline in cars. Sales totaled 166,865 vehicles last month, compared with 147,338 a year earlier.
The automaker says sales of cars last month fell 9 percent, while sales of SUVs jumped 29 percent. Truck sales were up 22.8 percent. Ford-branded sales were up 20 percent from a year earlier. Sales of the Explorer tripled, while sales of the Ford Escape were up 46 percent.
Ford Motor Co. also said it believes the current momentum in the industry should continue. It plans to build 675,000 vehicles in the first quarter of next year, up 3 percent, or 18,000 vehicles, compared with the same period this year.
10:42 a.m. EST: GM sales climbed 7 percent while Nissan's sales rose 19 percent, below Chrysler's 45 percent rise, but still strong.
Buyers snapped up GM's small cars and pickup trucks. Sales of the Chevrolet Cruze compact rose 54 percent, while the Chevrolet Silverado pickup, GM's top-selling vehicle, saw sales jump 34 percent.
"We are seeing a broad spectrum of customers return to the market," said Don Johnson, GM's U.S. sales chief.
At Nissan, the tiny Versa led sales with a 38 percent increase, but SUV and truck sales also rose 32 percent.
8:30 a.m. EST: Chrysler's U.S. sales jumped 45 percent last month thanks to strong demand for the Jeep brand.
Chrysler sold 107,172 new cars and trucks last month compared with 74,152 a year earlier. Jeep sales rose 44 percent on strong demand for the Compass crossover and the Liberty small SUV.
Higher incentives in November also brought buyers into showrooms. TrueCar.com says Chrysler's incentives rose 6 percent from October to nearly $3,300 per vehicle.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
CNBC's Phil LeBeau has the numbers from GM and a company outlook, with Don Johnson, General Motors VP of U.S. sales.

I fell sorry for the new car owners.
I would love to see the small car #s for Chrysler. Fiats are appearing on the road and though there is little to be desired other than the price, it appears a real coupe for Fiat. All of those retail doors, parts warehouses, distribution centers and network, a lot of the Mercedes diesel technology, and much more all with a low interest loan via Uncle Sam. What a win for Fiat.
Fiats have been around for years, they are built in Mexico for the US, and sold at independantly owned dealers, so what has that got to do with Uncle Sam?
Chrysler has the best lineup all around.
Good to see them doing well in sales.
.
Perhaps in lieu of a new vehicle you can continue to drive your 1983 Gremlin.
Auto 101, since you feel that why, might I suggest that you keep driving your 1983 Gremlin?
an 83 gremlin would be pretty damned valuable, considering tamc stopped making them in '78. lmao.
The sales numbers come from the companies production line and are NOT the numbers sold at retail. End of November GM had a total of 623,666 cars in their inventories and that is an all time high for this company. What this means is that they keep producing lot more than what people are buying and inventories are piling up. We are never told exactly how many cars are being registered to new owners and all they report is how many cars is produced.
I drive an 08 Outback and a 10 Routan ( which is what the wife picked) She hates it and cant believe how cut throat Chrysler one thing is for sure she will never buy another VW or Chrysler.
Al Hirt had a Gremlin. It was doubly entertaining when I was in New Orleans, watching his show and watching him get out of his little brown Gremlin.
Good news for Chrysler!!!!
The snowflakes come down and Jeep sales go up; not unexpected, but still good to see Chrysler continuing to climb out of the hole they were in.
Can't afford a new vehicle right now but I'm leaning towards a Ford or Dodge. I think the federal bailout for Dodge helped it by giving it a wake-up call. I don't like all of their lineup and the jeeps look nice but are gas guzzlers and way too expensive. If you want to go 4 wheeling, don't buy a new vehicle just to beat up. That's stupid and if you are buying a Jeep just to commute on your snow packed roads, you're still paying too much money for it. The Dodge trucks have a good power-train warranty as long as you are driving 20,000 miles atleast for 5 yrs. Ford's are the best bang for your buck on a domestic auto. I kinda like the Hyundai to tell you the truth. 100,000 mile warranty and 4 models with 40 mpg and they look good and come loaded. without costing an arm and a leg. The Mustang is the best bang for your buck in performance for the money. They eat up the Camaros and the Dodges and the imports.
cant afford the price of a new car. incomes are down for most. wont buy chrylser based on what they did to their bond holders in their bankruptcy. will buy something besided gm or chrylser.
How about something from Gubamint Motars? Yeah, like the fact that the Gubamint got involved and look at the success of the Volt? Shold it be called Spark instead. The wild claims of range are only off by 75 % but what would you expect from Gubamint?
@RagingCapitalist: how is the troll business these days? Do you get paid by the post or total character count of the responses? I suppose Newsvine's storage provider is compensating you appropriately - do they still send the checks directly to your corporate headquarters in your parents' basement?
you a bond holder???? or are you employed by the investors????...did you know 1 auto spins off 9 additonal jobs.....wonder how many jobs a bond holder makes..not many, my guess
@john
what does total jobs produced have to do with being a bondholder or stockholder. fact of the matter is the unions got the sweetheart deal from the government, when the government stepped in and gave a huge middle finger to the bondholders and stockholders --- which -- get this --- are the creditors.
why in the world would you buy from a company that robs and steals from the general public?
Hell they ever revised the numbers for GM the other day, somethingg like GM still owes 40 billion?
laws are laws, creditors are to be paid out prior to workers lol...
Brendan??? Corporate America has been getting the sweet heart deals eg..company ships jobs overseas..they get a tax credit???? exxon/mobil paid no taxes ..in fact, the got a refund..while the american taxpayers are paying for their subsidies.....banks , insurance companies..big pharma..et al..are ripping us off...so dont give me that bs......we paid it back........ask the banker if they paid back all the tarp including the additional 7.1 trillion dollars..btw i work for chryssler and my taxes went for this as well..and the other subsidies...two wars tax cuts for the wealthy.....so you can try again
And the banks didn't steal from the general public? And bankers and traders didn't get a much bigger sweetheart deal from the government? The financial industry got at least 10 times as much money from the government than the auto industry, probably a lot more. So much for the general public feeling sorry for shareholders and creditors who made bad investments and bad loans.
Ed if you are referring to the Tarp "Bailouts" you need to go the U.S. Treasury website. The money everyone thinks was given to the banks has actually been paid back and the government actually has made money. Auto industry and AIG have not paid back and the biggest cost of the "Bailout" was to assist homeowners.
@john the auto industry would not have been in as bad of shape if the Union Workers were not so GREEDY..... I will never buy a new GM or Chrysler again..... As to the Investment we have in both it will be a cold day in hell before we see that money back..... So not only the investors got SCREWED but so did us TAX PAYERS..... Thank you President Obama for the shafting.....
Greedy???? wtf u talking about???? we didnt mismanage the company,,sorry dude the cost of the car is about 9 %....oh I get it.....if im a hedgefund mgr or bank ceo et al..im entitled to be greedy,,sorry if it werent for autoworkers et al.(unions) there wouldnt be any middleclass....btw chrysler paid back their loans.......with interest......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...and go buy an import...because the way things are going your job might be overseas as well.....btw my taxes dollars also paid for this and bushy and his gangs mistakes....ohguy ur a MORON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@john yep you are right they were mis-managed, because for years they gave in to the Union DEMANDS, and YES I am a ex Union Member and would never ever join one again.....
If you have seen any of my posts you know I do not support any of the LOAN SHARKS that were allowed into the banking/investment industry.... They all belong in front of a firing squad ( I say firing squad because if they went to jail we would then have to support them there ).....
If you are really a banker, you would know that any equity holder of either GM or Chrysler would have lost 60% of their bond's face value and all of their stock equity if the companies had liquidated.
The fact that there is still a running concern that is generating profits and selling vehicles people want to buy is a testament to national policy. Notice that I did not say that it had to favor the bondholders specifically.
The bankers crashed the economy (and all the collateral damage that created). The fact that you guys didn't understand the risks involved when holding the equity and bonds had nothing to do with what the government did or did not do. That is why they call it an INVESTMENT and NOT a GUARANTEE.
Apparently it is OK to bail out people as long as it is the CORRECT people right?
I bought a new Versa hatch last month. Excellent little car!
I bought 2011 Nissan Maxima, without a doubt it's one of the best cars I've ever owned and I've owned over 100 cars....... My daughter just bought the big Jeep SUV [she has two kids] and my son just bought a Ford Mustang. Sorry no GMs in this family.
I just wanted to let you know that I love how you inserted that she has two kids as if you think that is at all relevant to her purchasing a large SUV. If her two kids are so fat that they need so much room, she needs to get them active.
Two adults can comfortably fit in the back of a Sentra, and probably that Versa, so I certainly don't buy the nonsense that people need the extra room for two kids, especially when most of the time the vehicle will have only her in it.
Two kids is never a "reason" for "needing" a large SUV. Four or more kids? Yeah, probably (three kids can fit in a medium sedan).
I would love to buy a Jeep Wrangler Plug in but Chrysler doesn't have the guts to actually build one and bring it to market. They may toy with the idea (concept) but won't bring it to market. Of course, if they do, they will limit colors to the same boring black, white, and grey and ugly red that all electric car makers are using. Ugh. Boring.
Chrysler is the best of the american 3. Dodge Ram pickups are by FAR the best on the market. One tough machine.
Good for GM and Chrysler. Buy only American made. 200% tax on all imports.
And with that don't forget a layoff for every American building exports. Think small and grow small, think large and someday you may gorw large.
maint and edward - I am torn on the auto issue. If a car is made here I feel it's okay to buy since it's employing American labor. If it's made in the US it is helping employment.
You are a moron . I will never buy American garbage cars !
Jaga: that's awful Patriotic of you, Congratulations
tryreality-1568930
When it comes to my money , I will buy what I want and what's reliable . Had enough bad luck with American cars before to last me for a life time .
No thanks , I will keep driving my Toyota in the winter and my BMW in the summer . Third year now with both of them ( brand new when I bought them ) and never had a problem .
Also , had a few BMW's before and again only good experience . Unfortunately , I can say the same thing about my two fords and three GM cars .
So are you happy for GM, Chrysler and it's workers?
I, for one, am glad that you are not in any position to influence economic policy. Not only does that violate international trade agreements, but it is bad business sense.
The countries that are subject to that tax would quickly respond in kind, stifling American business abroad and costing thousands, if not millions, of lost American jobs.
So please, until you learn at least some basics of business, do not speak on the subject. You will only confuse other business-illiterates with your bad information.
BMW and toyota are more made in america than GM or chysler LOL
holy irony!!
Yea Right American Made.....
maint-870932 could you define Americna made?
Is Your Car Made in America? Its Growing More Difficult To Tell
Posted: Oct 06, 2010
At least they roll out on the showroom floor here in the U.S. of A. build by American Tax Payers
Built by Americans is your criteria? Then you'll have no problem viewing the particular Toyotas, Nissans, and whatever else is built in US plants as American cars, and viewing the particular GMs, Fords, and whatever else that is built in Mexico and Canada as foreign cars?
Yes, build in America is my criteria.
Very good for Chrysler. It's amazing what happens when the company isn't owned by a bunch of money grubbing germans like it was the last decade. I see 200s and avengers everywhere, and they are getting good reviews. Something Chrysler hasn't had for a while. I agree too that Rams are one of the best, if not the best pickups on the market. Prices are high, but you get what you pay for. If only I could afford a Challenger.
Chrysler looks like it is doing well, but that is only because its comparative months are horrendous. They could have done nothing to the cars and had a sales increase this month.
The title to this article includes Government Motors even though Ford handily had a higher increase in sales - not mentioned in this article (because it would require research) is that Ford was going against over 20% sales increases in November 2010 but still managed a 13% sales increase overall this month. Government Motors had a less strong month in November 2010 (11% up over November 2009), and only managed a 7% sales increase this November. And Ford is including its orphaned brand, Mercury, in its sales reporting, while Government Motors was deceptive and INTENTIONALLY reported its sales without including the orphaned brands to inflate its sales percentage increases!
This report also clearly mis-represents Chevrolet truck sales - the percentage increase is because this brand of trucks has underperformed consistently in the marketplace while Ford has continued to increase and increase its sales and goes against stronger sales to begin with!
Exactly whos buying? My 09 got wrecked twice so I stopped paying on it. However my 95 deville & 99 Ford sedan run flawlessly with 134K & 146K on them respectively. Once the new car smell wears off theyre about the same provided you do required maitnence & keep the emissions up to date. That means changing out oxygen sensors & egr valves sometimes.
My 2007 Chevy Aveo is a great car, not one problem. :)
You broke something and refused to pay for it?
tryreality sorry but that Aveo was not made in America, try Korea....
Another feather in President Obama's cap. Obama/Biden 2012
I was wondering how many comments I would have to read before I came across someone mentioning the President's role in the success the auto industry is enjoying!
by toyota and die.
sure glad we had Obama and Democrats in charge when it came time to bailing out the automakers. Without the bailouts- under Republican "leadership"- our auto industry would have been dead and millions more would be unemployed.
Obviously you know nothing about bankruptcy both would still be in business.
Tboy: The GOP wanted to close the doors and send those jobs oversees, KNOW IT ALL?
They did??? or did you here that on MSNBC!!! Geeez
On MSNBC,CNN,NEWSPAPERS...................................
Not surprised!!!
If the GOP was in the White House 3 years ago, GM and Chrysler would no longer exist and millions more would be unemployed. Electing any of the current GOP crop is equivalent to dropping a nuclear bomb in this Country.
The Democraps have already exploded the nuke bomb. Its called 15 trillion in debt!!!
Bush took Clintons surplus and turned it into 2 war, perscription drug program and tax breaks for the rich......... ALL UNPAID FOR AND OFF THE BOOKS!!!
With the full backing of the Democrapic Congress!!! And don't forget to include Newt and the Repubs on them surpluses!!!
The surplus went POOF from the failed policies of Corporate driven GOP.
They crammed those GOP Policies down our throats, See Reconciliation act of 2001 and 2003.
Auto Makers would not be Auto Makers without the men and women on the assembly lines.
Thanks workers!! You made America Great.
They sacrificed a little in benefits and wages to keep the door open. I cheer their efforts. THANKS
I'm glad Flip (Let Detroit Go Bankrupt) Romney wasn't president
The same Mitt that sent millions of American jobs oversees.
The GOP bloggers won't even touch this topic I see.
Of course not, it does not connect with the fear center in their little Reptilian Grinch Brains.
GM? 8 strong buys, 3 moderate, 1 hold.
oopsie. Haters gonna have to hate something else real soon.
You Libs really need something to hope for. Taxpayers are still going to lose billions on the deal.We should all be proud of Ford since they did it the American way. But i do understand why you have to give him credit !!!!
Him? that is MR. PRESIDENT TO YOU.
You love him not me!!!
Yes I do, one of the greatest Presidents ever, to bad the GOP/TEABAGGERS wouldn't get out of the way so He can move OUR Country forward. OBAMA/Biden 2012
Yes Carter the second!!!
Google "worst President ever" and a picture of the CLOWN you voted for not only once but TWICE will appear.
Who Clinton really???
Yes Ford I am proud of you put your still a dead company..... The UNIONS will just keep sucking you dry, and you still have the Legacy Costs to deal with that GM & Chrysler were able to dump..... But at least you did not stick it to the Tax Payers..... Yous is the only so called American car left I would think about buying.....
So GM roared with a 7% increase??? Except the volts now have a voluntary recall because of the battery. So if you bought a volt, you paid 45K got 8K back from the taxpayers, now you get your full 45K back??? WTF.
What's wrong tboy, can't keep up? Or did you smash your monotor? LOL
It's monitor!!! LMAO!!!!
I'd rather misspell a word now and then instead of coming on here and making a fool out of myself to the world like you. LMAO
I'm only making a fool of myself to a bunch of brainwashed Libs.I have no problem with that!!!
You're the Brainwashed fool. LOL
hey if you listened to the speaker of the house (rush limbaugh) there wouldnt have been a bailout for GM etc. then the chinese would have bought them...eh?
Tboy - is that the best you can do?
He's just another mindless troll
At least i can spell LMAO !!!
I'm so proud, CONGRATULATIONS
You need something to be proud of i can see!!!
I'm comfortable with my life, retired at 52
Tboy: You're too easy,I'm logging out. peace out.
Personal floatation is coming soon. And I dont mean on water. I mean over it.
Soon you will fly to work, to the store, etc. This is about to really take off. Pun intended.
VW is not listed in the article, but their increase is over 40%. I just bought another of their diesels and getting 44 mpg on the highway. Bought one in 2000, 2005 & 2009. The 2000 just went over 210,000 miles and averaging 49 on the highway.
