Wolfgang Puck calls out Starbucks for 'terrible coffee'

Getty Images

Wolfgang Puck isn't evidently a fan of Starbucks coffee.

By msnbc.com staff

First McDonald’s, then Dunkin’ Donuts. Now Starbucks has to feel the wrath of celebrity chef and restaurateur Wolfgang Puck, who calls the coffee giant’s brew “terrible.”

Perhaps not coincidentally, Puck did so during a Houston press junket to promote his own line of bottled iced coffee. He told Culturemap Houston his company had been working “about a year-and-a-half to get the flavors right.” Then he accused Starbucks of a Jedi mind trick.

"Starbucks, what they make, if you open a bottle and smell it, what did they do to the coffee?" Puck said. "They created a taste in the memory for people, which is interesting, so that people really think it's good coffee … But it's terrible coffee!”

Thanks to Eater for pointing it out.

It's hard to find a fresh cup anywhere. Starbucks is gross and burnt. You have to have it with chocolate and caramel to stand it!

Starbucks is too burnt - they make money because of the high caffeine that give people a "fix" so they come back for more like a drug!

You are not alone. Starbucks is just about the worst coffee I have ever tasted. I think people who like it have it with so much stuff added to it they can't taste the coffee. Since I don't like flavored coffee or cream and never use sweetner, I get almost the full brunt of the bitter. Can't imagine drinking it black!

Right with you. My morning cup of Folgers tastes 20 times better. I've actually had coffee in the Navy that tasted better than Sbucks and Navy coffee resembles terpentine more than coffee.

I also agree. Their coffee is bad. I used to work there, so I know. I make better coffee at home. Worst is their espresso drinks. They cover up their bad with this and that. I remember having cappuccinos in Italy, and nothing needed to be added to it to make wonderful. At Starbucks, you need to add loads of sugar, and the foam on top is like packing peanuts. If they foamed milk correctly, it would be slightly sweet.

I've also had their bottled drinks, and they are even worse. A doubleshot is milk sugar, and espresso flavoring, and the fraps in a bottle are also a poor excuse for a coffee drink. Their drinks should only be drank as a last resort before passing out when you absolutely must stay awake.

Before Starbucks, a cup of coffee cost under $0.25, now you are lucky to find the same cup size for under $2.50.

It is strong and bitter...WP is being rude about putting down Starbucks....his coffee is likely not so great either. You don't sell your stuff by putting down the competitor. You promote your stuff because "you think it is better". He has no finesse. What do you expect from him ? He is like a Swartznegger of the kitchen.....a bully.

"$2.50", "five dollars"...etc... OMG, Do you people have a clue?! Starbucks coffee is $1.65 a cup and your second cup is .50!!!! That's right 50 cents!! And unlike McDonalds and Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks brews dozens and dozens of different roasts...in fact on ANY day you may request 'mild' or 'bold'!
That said Puck is a self-serving liar, and if I were Starbucks I'd sue the little emperor!
Pucks supermarket frapp's that he's 'ho'ing' here suck! They are awful and taste like a coffee flavored water n cream mess! And he sells them for...wait for it....$8.49 for a FOUR PACK!!! LIAR-
His coffee sucks and he charges more for it, off the supermarket shelf than Starbucks does brewed fresh in a restaurant. Shameful LIAR!
Puck is a schmuck!

Isn't it ultimately a matter of personal taste? That's why there is a variety of coffee brands to choose from. If there was actually "one best coffee" then it would put all the others out of business. Go with what you like and let everyone else enjoy what they like.

Oh boy - another Starbucks basher! No offense to Puck or anyone else, but don't tell me what coffee I should or shouldn't like. I love Starbucks - and no - it has nothing to do with the caffeine - I generally drink decaf. It is bold, strong and delicious!

Starbucks coffee IS awful. Everyone at my office salivates over the stuff and I just don't get it. It all tastes bad.

If I have to drink "fast food" coffee, 7-11 makes the best, hands down but I usually make my own at home.

I agree. Starbuck's is just this bitter stuff that doesn't really taste like coffee. Might be decayed tree bark with a handful of dirt thrown in for all I know. I've made coffee at home for people that thought Starbuck's was awesome and they couldn't believe how much better my coffee is over Starbuck's. I don't do anything special. I don't have to have exact beans grown on one certain mountain in a place I've never heard of and picked on one certain day of the year. I just buy whatever beans are on sale, grind it myself if I'm able and store it in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. I use a cheapo drip coffee maker that I think I paid $10 for. Literally this isn't high dollar coffee made using rocket science but people still rave over how much better mine is. I can make a couple pots for what Starbucks charges for a grande.

All Starbucks is good at is marketing and brainwashing people into loving their day-old battery acid and paying mega-bucks for it. If I have a choice between their's and McDonald's I choose McDonald's but usually I just wait until I get home and make my own.

Pick a bean; arabica or robusta.

The only difference between choosing between beans and two political parties, is that you can blend the beans into something that is palatable.

As for Wolfgang; I'm pushing my own brand so all the other choices are bad.

His K-Cups are terrible, not as bad as that Newman's Own garbage but not up to even the taste of the Emeril LaGasse ones and nowhere near some of the Green Mountain. The Dunkin Donuts ones are awesome but you can only get them at DD stores, not online or a price club and are expensive 12 bucks for 14 K Cups. The Starbucks Cafe Verona is available at Costco now and is awesome.
