1 Main St., Brooklyn, N.Y.
For sale: $23,500,000
Whoever said time is money must have seen this New York City apartment.
The converted clock tower penthouse is by far the most expensive listing in Brooklyn at $23.5 million. Located in the Dumbo neighborhood (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass), the 7,000-square-foot space is defined by four 14-foot-high glass clock faces. Peering out between each working clock hand are 360-degree vistas of the New York City skyline including views of the Statue of Liberty and Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges.
Built in 1914, the brick tower building was first used as a cardboard box factory. In the 1980s, developer David Walentas of Two Trees Management bought the factory as part of a $12 million real estate acquisition.
Walentas turned the clock tower building into 126 condo units as part of the area development in the late 1990s, leaving the top portion of the tower until a few years ago. As a part of a personal project, he outfitted the three-story penthouse with high-end furnishings and "smart home" technology. Accessible by a private glass elevator, the loft-like apartment boasts 15- to 50-foot ceilings, an open floor plan and sleek modern finishes. The fourth floor has a small crow's nest and rooftop deck for further city panoramas.
The three bathrooms have stone radiant-heated floors, and the all-white kitchen features stone and stainless steel countertops, high-end appliances and lacquer cabinets.
Originally listed on the Dumbo real estate market in 2005 for $25 million, the penthouse caught the eye of Esquire magazine editors, who used it as their "2011 Esquire Apartment."
"They could pick anywhere, and they fell in love in this apartment," said Ian Kleier, vice president of brokerage Gumley Haft Kleier.
Labeling it the "ultimate bachelor pad," the magazine outfitted the three-bedroom space with luxury designs sponsored by Hugo Boss, Asics, Lufthansa and others.
"They say they've transformed a stunning contemporary home into a modern man's lifestyle," said Kleier. "It's just gorgeous what they've done to it."
Esquire showed off the finished pad with a few charity events, hosting celebrities and philanthropists for the Fresh Air Fund, City of Hope and International Medical Corps. While you can take a video tour of Esquire's space online, the penthouse will also be in the January 2012 issue of Esquire.
Esquire's furnishings are only temporary, but whoever buys the pricey penthouse probably won't need to invest in any clocks.
According to data from Zillow's Mortgage Marketplace, monthly payments on the apartment would be $88,319, assuming a 20 percent down payment and 30-year mortgage.
The listing is held by Michele Kleier of Gumley Haft Kleier.

WOW....
Yeah ...wow!
To MSNBC I say Bite the Wall!!!!
People are trying to scrape up money to have some kind of a Thanksgiving gathering(in many cases..lunch meat will be splurging) and you guys throw this in our faces. How uncaring.
Peaceful OWS protesters are being sprayed with pepper spray (whilst having their hands behind their backs) to get the point out there against the corporate message machine.
What will it take????!!!!
You mean peaceful OWS protestors who disobeyed police...What would happen if a person was told to escort their vehicle by an officer at a traffic stop and they just disobeyed? They would be forced out. Same as your peaceful, law breaking protestors. Get a grip. They are eating lunchmeat while texting from their iphones and ipads...
MSNBC has other articles on what you are complaining about. But, no matter how much you will scream that the sky is falling, there really other things going on. This article is an interesting diversion.
If all you care about are those type of articles, don't read this one or others like it.
Humansmatter - Ahh, another OWS person. If you are to offended by this article, then why did you even click on it? There are plenty of articles on this site. Not every article on this entire site is going to be something you enjoy. I didn't realize that since some people struggle this time of year that you aren't allowed to put out an article like this.
Yes, there are families hurting this holiday season.
And then...there are those that thankfully aren't.
I don't want to blind myself to the hardships around me, but nor do I want to mire myself in misery every minute of every day...as selfish as that may look in writing.
GM-1841306 said it best: there are other things going on. And some of those things are newsworthy and interesting.
humansmatter - Your right! I can't believe they were even allowed to build such a monstrosity. Just think of 'lunch meat' that could have been purchased had the government simply seized those wasted funds.
Why was this collapsed?! So much for speaking the truth!
I love when builders rehab old spaces....this is breathtaking.
Absolutely. I love open floor plans...and would also love the opportunity to walk through this place and see it first-hand.
As you say...breathtaking!
To "I love my cats & Shartorius" You're intelligence is very refreshing! Thank you for taking note of the story and the beauty of this building. My family has been in the structural steel fabrication business for 55 years. "I too admire the design and craftsmanship" The effect it has on our emotions, to think and design such a work of art is truly art that endures time.
All that nice clean wall space to hang your Gone With the Wind Commemorative Plate collection!
Seriously, a really beautiful space with clean lines and unique views. I never will be able to afford a month's rent there, but hats off to the architects and designers.
a month's rent? Hell, I couldn't afford a week's! ;)
I wounder if you could get sued for changing the time by five or ten mins backwards and forward once a week? lolol
I love Google Maps with street view. The building is at the corner of Main and Water Streets in Brooklyn, right between the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges.
Wretched excess. Gilding the lily.
Pull the wedgie out of your butt and enjoy the beautiful design.
Hey guys. You know, Christmas IS coming...
Didn't somebody in Connecticut recently win 250 million dollars in the Power Ball lottery? Of course it wasn't me, it's never me, but if it had been......This might be where I start my urban house hunting.
I'll take it!
How'd my house make it on MSNBC?
Kidding. But really, it's things like this that make me wonder about the balance in our world. I'm all for success and the hard work it takes to achieve it, but really, who needs a $23.5 million dollar home. And I'm assuming this guy is taking a loss on it considering the awful market. Just crazy. If people were more charitable with their money and gave some of it to animal shelters, disabled war veterans, etc. we'd be in a much better world.
How about that good-for-nothing idiot Kim Kardashian making something like $18 million off advertisements and sponsors off that scam of a wedding when our economy is in the gutter and people are struggling to feed their families. Something has to change with the way people conduct themselves.
kyle6286-3702172, balance wonders aside, if you had a 300 million dollar fortune, you obviously wouldn't need any material thing.
As far as peoples conduct, consider this. What do you think that yeast would be thinking as they voraciously gorge on the last of their resouces, while they multiply uncontrolled in a vat of beer? As you observe the behavior of the denizens of Brooklyn, and reflect on our world, think yeast in a vat my friend.
I wonder what it's like to get laid in a crows nest?
.... I thought it was "District Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass" (?) .... and I'm from Boston ...
The problem is, it's in Brooklyn.
Th real problem is it's in the US.
At leat it isnt Jersey
It's fun to dream....
.
This place is perfect for me... Now where did I put that 23 million....
Alright, I just viewed the Esquire online video of this place. I don't know why it didn't occur to me before, but why they are calling this a "Bachelor Pad". You wouldn't have to be a man to enjoy living there. The views are phenomenal!
I looked into buying the place but ultimately left disappointed. It's too bad too. I thought it was a fantastic place.
They wanted 23.5 million but I had them talked down to 18.6 million so I was getting a great deal. Unfortunately though, they insisted on $50 down.....
OK, that was funny.
I hope there's a mirror on wall across the room from the outward-facing see-through clock in the photograph. (That way, you can see what time it is on the clock without having to do mental gymnastics.)
Why that place is Nothing,,, ya'll should see my place here in the woods, in missouri, along the river, with the snakes, frogs, deer, wolves, coyotes, its an amazing view really, and very warm too with my custom built 55 gallon steel drum wood stove . I'd sell it for maybe 70 million !!!
Why is it considered a bachelor pad? It's a 3-bedroom apartment...
oh yeah, i'll run right out and buy it. what a stupid story for the 99%.
It is beautiful. I would love to be able to walk through it. It would be so cool with those huge windows with the clocks. Can you imagine if it was a bell clock tower? lol
However, just thinking of the price, and the excess put into places like this make me think that some people have way too much money. I mean, come on, $23 million? Think of all the good that could be done with that kind of money. If i had $23 million, I would be giving back to my community, the animal shelters and the schools on the Indian Reservations(where they are really struggling) -- not spending it on a house that the monthly payment for is more than most people make in a year!
guaranteed to get laid .... imagine the debauchery .... wow ....
$23.5 million?...chump change
