Madoffs attempted suicide on Christmas Eve

AP

Ruth Madoff

The wife of financial swindler Bernard Madoff said in an interview to be aired Sunday that the couple attempted suicide by taking pills on Christmas Eve 2008 after his estimated $65 billion Ponzi scheme was exposed.

Madoff, 73, is serving a 150-year prison sentence after confessing to running a decades-long Ponzi scheme that bilked investors out of billions of dollars, considered the biggest financial fraud in history. He was arrested on Dec. 11, 2008.

"I don't know whose idea it was, but we decided to kill ourselves because it was so horrendous what was happening," Ruth Madoff told the CBS program "60 Minutes" in her first interview.

The couple's elder son Mark, 46, hanged himself in his New York apartment last Dec. 11, the second anniversary of his father's arrest. Mark and Andrew Madoff turned in their father to authorities a day after he confessed to them.

Ruth Madoff said she and her husband took Ambien sleeping pills and possibly some Klonopin anti-anxiety pills in their suicide attempt.

"We had terrible phone calls. Hate mail, just beyond anything and I said ... 'I just can't go on anymore,"' she said. "(Christmas) added to the whole depression."

"We took pills and woke up the next day. ... It was very impulsive and I am glad we woke up," Ruth Madoff said.

Excerpts of the interview were released Wednesday.

Before the suicide attempt the couple sent a package of sentimental items, including jewelry, to their younger son Andrew, breaching a court order. Three years later Andrew asked his mother why she had sent the package.

"And she told me that she and my father had planned to kill themselves. ... They put that package together beforehand and sent it out," Andrew Madoff told "60 Minutes".

Defrauded Madoff investors have viewed his sons, wife and other family members suspiciously, arguing it is impossible that they did not know about his lies. No family members have been criminally charged and they reject accusations that they were aware of the fraud. Madoff has said he acted alone.

Since he pleaded guilty in March 2009, seven other people have been arrested in the case, including several of his long-time employees and an outside accountant.

For decades, investors big and small flocked to the New York-based money manager, hoping to gain entree onto his seemingly exclusive client list as he promised steady returns that defied the broader markets. In reality, Madoff always was seeking new investors to keep his scheme running.

A court-appointed trustee is trying to recover money for investors defrauded in the Ponzi scheme, a fraud in which early investors are paid with money from new ones. The schemes often collapse when sufficient investors can't be lined up or when a number of investors want to cash out.

Two questions for my fellow 'viners, because apparently I've been mistaken:

Isn't Bernie Madoff Jewish, and if so, why would Christmas be depressing to him/them?

Christmas is really a secular American holiday. It has been since Sears and Coke got involved with it in the early 1800s.

So lots of Americans have fond feelings for the December holidays even if they reject the "reason for the season".

I thought the same thing as well.....unless Ruth Madoff is Christian? Who knows?

Anyway, it's really hard to have any empathy for them, compared to the damage Madoff did. Why isn't Ruth Madoff in prison?

Boo Hoo Ruth Maddoff You should be in prison right along with your husband. You shouldnt have a pot to p*ss in right now yet you made out like a bandit while others still haven't even begun to recover. Their retirements gone. Their life savings gone. Their homes gone. This woman will burn in hell deservingly.

Because it is insincere and she is trying to get sympathy from the broadest audience possible.

I wonder how many people have committed suicide who were true victims of these Wall St types--people who lost jobs, lived on savings until that ran out, failed to keep their homes, lost everything. What about those wrecked lives?

If you really want to commit suicide, there are plenty of foolproof methods.

I learned that answer when I thought it was odd that someone called themselves a Jewish atheist. The term "Jewish" isnt just a religious one, it is also an ethnic one. Therefore, you can be of Jewish ancestry but not a practicing the faith of Judaism. So, Madoff can be of a Jewish decent but still celebrates all other holidays like anyone else would. HOpe that clears it up for you

@Alice-354401: Christmas is neither secular nor an exclusively American holiday. 1) Approximately 1/3 of the world's population identify themselves as being Christian; 2) the word itself is derived from the Middle English Christemasse and Old English Cristes mæsse, a phrase first recorded in 1038, well before America was even in existence, and certainly way before Sears came along and cashed in on it. [9] "Cristes" is from Greek Χριστός Christos and "mæsse" is from Latin missa (the holy mass).

Many of the customs observed as part of the holiday are of northern European origin, particularly Scandinavia, as Northern Europe was the last part of the world to Christianize. Therefore some pagan traditions may have rubbed off.

My heart goes out to those who lost their lives as they knew them due to Madoff's schemes, but doesn't individual greediness of those investors have something to do with his ability to scam them to that degree?

As far as I understand there is no I REPEAT no evidence that the family knew what Madoff did. Do we now start punishing family members when someone steals a car, break and enters, or commits murder? Sure everyone is angry but that doesn't make a crime...

You can't blame his family, his sons turned him in when he confessed to them and one son couldn't stand the disgrace so he committed suicide. The guilty one is the one to punish, in a way his family were victims also.

If his wife knew at the start what he was doing then she too should stand trial. As far as I am concerned she would be an acessory to the fact, or at least in my book she would. Yet I doubt that she knew unti he confessed. He sounds like a big head, self-centered person .

According to my psych major friends, the holidays experience the highest frequency of suicides and attempted suicides. Depression will do that to you.

And if you work in a psych ward, you know the holidays are the worst time of year to work there. The psych patients get intolerable, with their yelling, screaming, crying, demanding, violence, throwing things around, beating up others, mutilating themselves, destroying stuff they get their hands on or stuffing it in places they shouldn't, making a mess of their living area out of maliciousness or out of apathy ...you name it.

And for all you who think the feds and the creditors took everything he had, I have a bridge for sale! He and his wife and children have billions hidden away in secret accounts and safety deposit boxes all over the world. Just like Daffy and Saddam Hussein had. And the wife of Arafat. All Madoff's wife has to do is go somewhere and make a secret call and the other person makes a secret call etc. and she can put some make up and a scarf, glasses etc and pull out all she wants from the ATM machines.

I only hope Chavez and Assad are as stupid when their times come. There is a reason those swiss bankers are fat and lazy, they have billions sitting in their banks not paying out interest to anyone. And their books are colder than a hooker's heart.

Their internet security system puts the pentagon's to shame.

I'm not sure but I think older Jewish men (maybe all of them) don't discuss business with their wives. Like I'm saying I'm not possitive about that but I believe I heard something like that before. Then if they gave the same effort with the suicide as he did the ponzi scheme maybe he would of succeeded. Maybe he's one of those guys that when he puts his mind to something he don't give up til he succeeds. You never know, he might find some solace communicating with his wife and other son and I really don't know that you ever get the thought of never ever getting out, but its might be enough to keep him going in there and who knows maybe he likes Bubba.

Now maybe they don't discuss business with their wives in normal situation, but this is a little different and most people have to tell someone when they do something like this. Its like they are looking for solace from someone close to them hoping for their understanding and sort of I guess approval. I think he told her after a few yrs. of doing it. I also believe they sat down and talked about what to do and being the prick that he is, I'm willing to bet they figured since a 100 plus yr. sentence comes with the crime and he being guilty, then why not keep doing it and then later turn himself in to his son. I bet they discussed family life lines, their own health issues, what they would do with the money and anything else they could think of before they decided their own fate and time to turn himself in. I bet the whole truth about all this would be so crooked that we wouldn't be able to believe it was possible for people to act like that. Hey it could be possible, lol.

UMGator maybe thats why a lot of the people felt good about investing with him. Hey it was almost all from the 1% that he robbed. I doubt they had all their cash invested with him, they are ok with all the other investments they have. He didn't clean them out toally, but maybe a little water boarding might help him to remember where he put the rest of it at. He probably just told his son about that stuff. I bet in 10 yrs his son goes and gets it and puts it in the matress for his kids.

Hi folks,

stop spreading hate

As for the attempted suicide. It's probably BS.

I agree to some extent with jeffery f. Those really wealthy top 1% - some of them were greedy

and should have used better judgement - if nothing else deversify. lol...but seriously, folks

We don't have to be gleeful at anyone's pain - it doesn't make us better off. So they are thieves

and so they are evil. Their time has come and gone - they are ruined, what good does it do us to

focus any energy on them.

Most of us aren't in the top 1% anyway. Who is it that is cheating most of us? Big business and those few 1%ers who empower government officials who continually keep the status quo. Did anyone from citibank, jp morgan, goldman sacs or bank of America go to jail?

no! You and I rewarded them for embezzling the country's future, by allowing the politicians of both parties to relax regulations and put poor people into mortgages they couldn't pay for...and to make matters worse we let them(Big banks and big brother) take risky bets with money that didn't belong to them and allowed them to speculate on bad debt instruments. Then we further reward them by bailing them out with out tax dollars and with using our countries debt. that's why we had that whole debt ceiling debacle. and what has really changed? not much...a coupler of stipulations for credit card companies to not raise rates(this is okay) but really, banks arre even more unfair then before...raising

fees, penalties and still giving the big brass enormous bonuses...Even Obama who I feel is a good man - his hands are tied by the big boys...sure he put on a good act and I have no doubt he did his best - but face it, the game is fixed...there a =re 13 guys in a smoked filled room swizzling $20 drinks and smoking cuban cigars...and they call in whoever is the president ...and say...okay mr president here what's goingto happen...and here's how we want you to pitch it to the American Public....So madoff is a beautiful distraction for the man...almost as reduculous as making Martha stewart the dotcom bubble demon. focus on the real problem everone Capitalism is good...but the government needs to have laws to protect the public...not just cronies to further the interests of the industrial financial complex.

No offense to anyone who is really a christian. part of the whole Christian thing is forgiveness

and righteousness and justice. (Although I can't say I'm a true christian(most Christians i know don't act like Christians) I myself would hope to at least try and pattern myself as a Christian - but am agnostic)

love thy neighbor!!!! or I'll killya!!! doesn't make sense

Isn't Bernie Madoff Jewish, and if so, why would Christmas be depressing to him/them?

I guess you haven't noticed that Christmas is partially a secular holiday, celebrated, or at least observed by non-Christians too. We all get the day off and we all get invited to the office Christmas (aka holiday party).

You're making too much over his Jewish faith. He was also just a man whose fake life was collapsing around him, at a time when everybody else was celebrating. Christian, Jew, Muslim or atheist, that had to be depressing.

...not that he didn't deserve it, not that he is not where he deserves to be.

Ruth --

Life hasn't taught you certain survival lessons, such as how to survive and thrive as a loner. When your self-esteem is based on the admiration of others, you're in a very dangerous place.

Few people know or understand the motivation of traders. They think it's about money because money is the marker. But it was only about money for the so-called "victims." You need to understand that, and you need to teach your children about the real world. It can seem like there is nothing worth living for when your world comes crashing down. But the real world never comes crashing down.

Your husband has learned nothing. He is running the same tape in prison, basking in the admiration of his new peers.

Learn to walk alone.

Waaah Waaah And this spoiled, lying nag is looking for sympathy. How disgusting. I would like to know why she was allowed to keep several million dollars and properties. They want pity yet from interviews and visits from some of the media, Madoff still has the arrogant attitude that he doesn't give a rip about what he did. Ruth Madoff and both of her sons should have been prosecuted. She should have to live the same crappy life of the people they ripped off. Lives destroyed and people walk away from it.

This isn't any different than what Wall St in general has done to our country and the middle class. Same thing.

Well I am an Agnostic who celebrates Christmas and has warm fuzzy feelings during the holiday season. As an Agnostic I don't believe in lynch mobs or wishing wives or kids harm because someone stole money or for that matter if someone does whatever someone else does. I see more outrage and death wishes for the thief than I do for murderers...and in fact it appears thieves get more time in jail than someone who kills. I'm glad I am not a believer as it looks like it is a very brutal thing to be. When his son committed suicide many celebrated. Is this embarrassing "death for money" chant what it takes for Christians to be called angels or angels of death that even a God wouldn't want contaminating heaven?

I wish the Madoff family well. They have suffered and are suffering currently. I am sorry for the suicide of their son. May he rest in peace and I hope that this family can find the strength even now to move forward.

Every person who was bundling good mortgages with bad ones to get rich, which is really a ponzi scheme ended up in jail I would be happy. I know a lot of people are against regulating the financial markets and say it is a bad idea but someone needs to watch out so these greedy bastards don't rape investors. Then you have to deal with the corruption of the regulators which was also a big problem.

These people are stealing our money and they should all go to jail and never be allowed to be in the financial industry again. If strict laws were enforced most of these people would think twice before pulling these crimes. If anyone thinks that Bernie is the only one that has or is doing this now, I hate to say this but you are nuts.

As far as the Madoffs commiting suicide that would be too good for them. They need to be reminded day in and day out for the misery that they caused so many people.

My question is did they really try to do it? If so, was the motive losing all that money, or that they caused so much suffering that they couldn't live with themselves? No matter what Mrs. Madoff says publicly, we'll never really know.

Also, and I may have missed this, but did she get paid for the interview? And speaking of the interview, she clearly has enough money for an expensive hair cut and color... not to mention it's obvious that she still has the funds for the facial tune-ups.

If you want us to believe you are suffering, Ruth, at least look the part. Sheesh.

If you are the spouse of a "wall street fund manager" have you asked him/her if they are, in reality, operating a Ponzi scheme or are they really earning the millions they take home ?

Does any wife of a wealthy man ask questions about the money they bring home, or do they take the money and enjoy it ?

I doubt very much that she did anything to receive the contempt of everyone. She is as much a victim of Bernie Madoff's schemes as the people who lost their life savings. I'm sure many others who cashed out early did so not knowing it was a scam.

Could Bernie Madoff have pulled this off with the assistance of one or two other people, absolutely.

I don't know if his dead son had children (I hope not) but I feel sorry for his daughter-in-law and other children. There is nothing worse than finding out a relative you love is the scum of the earth.

Maybe the worlds Ponzi scheme has come to an end. The Barbarians are at the gate, their pissed and looking for the 1 % to fuel their blood-lust. I wouldn't want to be one of the 1% right now. That family shouldn't have a single dime. My heart goes out to the other families that were fleeced by this individual, but to his family, they benefited from his criminal activities for more than long enough, time for them to feel the same suffering his other victims went through.

Sheer scale is a lot. And yes there are also human beings, but that's where the similarities end.

We are all from the general population and there is a huge difference between them and most of us. We are all human beings but our value systems separate us from one another. What BM and his wife did (she knew) was beyond the pale of belief and one would have to be very evil or very demented to not understand the gross negative effect the havoc you caused would effect the lives of those who trusted you.

Your point? If everyone acted like this monster Madoff, there would be no hope for our society. He is a scumbag of the highest degree. His crime was not petty nor typical of humanity.

Madoff ruined a lot of lives by his greed and hubris. There is a lot to differentiate that sociopath from the rest of us, too, besides "shear" scale.

Starting with a profound sense of right and wrong...

Where do they come from? Early on, the came from the Middle East and Rome. After migration, from Eastern and Southern Europe.

Where is the $65 billion now? That's a TON of mattress money. And, HOW did the people acquire their investment capital in the first place? Madoff seems to have taken from the crooks and transferred it to another crook, himself. Why aren't the OTHER crooks in prison with him? Possible answers: the careerists are concerned about their pensions? Or, is all the crooks were with him, then the careerists would have no azzez to kiss.

Right on, Hey Ruth if you want sympathy, it isn't happening. "Greed" drove this whole thing including the very exclusive investors who thought they could get a bigger return than the "regular" guy. You all got what you deserved for thinking you were better than everyone else. I will not be tuning in to hear your whine.
