Volkswagen is recalling 168,275 Audis, Golfs and Jettas for problems with the fuel line that could lead to leakage and perhaps ignite a fire, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Thursday.
In documents filed with NHTSA, Volkswagen said the fuel line in the recalled vehicles could develop cracks and leak under certain conditions. Because the leaks could happen near an ignition source, there's the potential for a fire, VW said.
It said the models affected include:
- AUDI / A3 2010-2012
- VOLKSWAGEN / GOLF 2010-2012
- VOLKSWAGEN / JETTA 2009-2012
- VOLKSWAGEN / JETTA SPORTWAGEN 2009-2012
The safety recall is expected to begin in November. VW said it will replace the injector line with an improved line.

Once again msnbc downplays another car manufacturers dangerous recall. They are a foreign auto maker dump their cars back in Berlin we need to hate them just as much as we hate the Asian auto makers too.
They build a number of their cars in Tenessee. However, my 2011 Golf was built in Wolfsburg, Germany as the TN plant wasn't at full capacity yet. They also build them in Mexico, Brazil, and East Asia. Just like most "American" car manufacturers.
Recalls are not dangerous. The failure to acknowledge a defect and refusal to issue a recall is dangerous.
Yes, VW shouldn't have had this problem in the first place. They should have used higher-grade hose material or connectors. But at least they are correcting it after the fact, although it will probably cost them millions of dollars to do it now.
@Mike
Downplaying? Are you expecting MSNBC to be like Glenn Beck and cry and scream that we will all die?
This is one of the more professional articles I have seen on this site. Succinct, and without bias.
You make the mistake of expecting this to be sensationalist, whereas it should be professional. Your problem is that you are inherently biased and expect the news to cater to your hateful views.
Right, because American made cars are of such high build quality... VW is now manufacturing in TN, by the way.
What is being downplayed? This is factual reporting.
I'm not certain who hates Asian automakers.. since their vehicles are all over the road in the US. I think ire was directed at Toyota's hubris with the "unintended acceleration" issues that came to a head last summer. This was something they ignored and blamed on operator error for years.
So you don't find it suspicious that all of a sudden it seemed like every accident was blamed on faulty acceleration after the news of that Lexus (which had the wrong-sized floor-mats installed).
Even the NHTSA said the primary cause of the studied crashes were driver error. Why do you ignore the reports, and harp on Toyota for blaming it on the primary cause?
I did not read the reports because by the time they were released, the media had moved on. I'll consider myself schooled. Though it is funny how the sensationalist press didn't think this was important enough to highlight after months of reporting how dangerous their cars were...

I should have been more clear, it SEEMED as though the resolution got far less press than the reporting of the incidents, my lack of interest notwithstanding.
At first I was scared, as I have an 09 Jetta, but upon reading the link, it seems it's only for diesel engines, correct? If so, I'm fine.
You appear to be correct. The NHTSA statement indicates the recall is only for the 2.0 turbo diesel engine. The article did not clarify that.
You are right And the fuel line does fix this I have performed this repair 3 times before the recall the dealer ship has only done 8. all of them have been for cylinder number 2
OMG!!!! Engineers aren't perfect????. Real parts fail in the real world???? I'm sure the Lads and Lassies at the Gubmint are all over evil VW for this problem. Lets discredit anything that isn't "highbred" and pole whip VW for their evil diesels. The only eco/economy vehicles on the market that don't fit into the administration's big picture. It's kinda like class warfare, highbreds against diesels, Eco-lites and grease burners. Too bad we don't get Europe's good diesel fuel. Would make ALL diesels pollute less and get better fuel economy......And NO, I don't own one. Just a reflection here...............
Steve, easy on the ??????
By the way, neither of those statements were questions, so why all the question marks?
And VW's are crap, plain and simple. It's not class warfare, it's a fact. Just ask someone that owns one.
One other thing, save the OMG!!!! for teenage girls. You're embarrassing yourself.
I picked up a '12 CC 2.0T this past May after ten years of exclusively driving American ('93 STS, '00 STS, '02 XK, '02 Escalade) and I am immensely satisfied with my VW. If VW's were crap in general and across the board as you have supposed, they probably wouldn't be selling so many of them now would they?
All I am saying is that it's hard to argue with success.
Actually, it is very easy to argue with success when one knows that your statement is a logical fallacy.
Argumentum ad populum
This is nothing new as the old VW bugs burned up all of the time when the cloth covered rubber gas lines close to the engine started to leak. You had to fasten all of the gas lines with screw on clamps otherwise you ended up with a leak and a burned up bug.
Wonder how many fiery deaths (and lawsuits) it took for VW to economically justify this recall? 50?
I have not heard of any. The good news is diesel is very hard to ignite. I have seen old diesel with fuel leaks and they would refuse to get it fixed and would continue t drive one I know went 35K before they replaced the old leaky pump (this was on a 98)
FahrvegKABOOM.
german CRAP
Big suprise. Volkswagon's SUCK! Haven't made a decent car in decades.
The Germans should be ashamed of themselves. Everybody I know that owns one HATES it and can't wait to get rid of it.
And for the record, you own and drive a what?
I have driven VW's since 1986. Until then I had driven American but dumped Detroit after GM refused to replace a cracked carburator because the warranty was 300 miles over the limit. I had a Ford that smelled so bad after I filled the gas tank you had to drive with the windows down to get the smell out. Ford said it was due to the emission requirements and could not be fixed. VW has not built some of the best cars in the world over the years but they do keep improving. The Golf is the best selling car in the world. GM, Ford and Chrysler were lazy and thought that we would buy whatever crap they built. They did not start building better cars because they could they started building better cars because they had to. Japan, Germany, Korea forced them. Had it not been for our taxpayer dollars bailing them out they would be gone...and as far as I am concerned they should be.
