Frito-Lay
Arch West
The man who led the team that invented Doritos will be taking his legacy to his grave.
Arch West died in Dallas earlier this month at age 97. At a graveside service scheduled for October 1 in Dallas, his family plans to pay tribute to him with the chip itself.
"We are tossing Doritos chips in before they put the dirt over the urn," his daughter, Jana Hacker, told the Dallas Morning News. "He'll love it."
Frito-Lay spokeswoman Aurora Gonzalez told msnbc.com that West led the team that created the popular Doritos chip, the first tortilla chip to be sold nationally.
The Dallas Morning News reported that West, a Frito-Lay marketing executive, got the idea for a fried tortilla chip after finding a snack shack selling the chips while on vacation with his family in California.

And they sure are delicious. Godspeed!
Helluva name, helluva life. Snack strong in the afterworld, Arch.
Don't forget the jalapeno bean dip.
He is a "CHIP" of the old "COB"
Most likely, he didn't give the Snack Shack guy any credit - or royalties - for his recipe. betcha.
Reading this made me crave them: I am LITERALLY leaving now to go buy a bag. YUMMY!
Ahh, the power of suggestion on a weak mind.
This man is a genius. Doritos are the best in the world. I too may request they be thrown into my grave.
I didn't even stop eating them during the time the romor was out that they contained Guano. They are that good.
lol
LOL, I would have been happier if I didn't mess up *rumor*.
I didn't even notice. Was still a good one.
Sort of apropos. I wonder how many have met an early demise due to overindulgence in chips?
"at age 97"
Yep, sounds "early" to me!
You know for a fact that HE ate them?
97 and well preserved
The guy or the chip?
Stoners everywhere are in mourning. Rest well good sir.
Black arm bands are in order.
Doritos are a fine snack food, no doubt, but my last will and testament specifies that I am to be buried with pork skins, cheetos and a six-pack of pepsi. I guess it's all just personal taste................
Nice selection. I ditched the pork skins from my diet long ago but have fond memories of them as my dad gave them to us as children as snacked on them with his beer.
I just hope something doesn't spark your brain back to life after being buried and you awake only to eat those snacks and then claw and scream your way to a horrifying death of being buried alive. I don't think those wonderful treats would be worth it if that were to happen!
AAAAAHHHHH Hot pork rinds yummie!
Godspeed, O pressed, rolled, deep fried wonder. We hardly knew ye.
I'd love to know what the original Doritos Arch West invented actually tasted like. Clearly they aren't the same MSG-infused treat me know today.
My guess is they'd either be awesome and very flavorful or very nasty compared to the highly processed ones today.
I love me some throwback-styled Taco Doritos w/my throwback pepsi. Nostalgia!
Rest in peace, triangular chip maker. I wish you a pleasant journey to that great cool ranch in the sky. Hope there's plenty of salsa there too.
I am a Doritos devotee through and through - they're far and away my favorite snack chip, and I thank Mr. West for enriching my life with crispy, cheese-powdered goodness. But reading the article, I had to wonder: why is it we say things like his team "invented" something after he saw someone else already selling it? Isn't that a little like Edison putting his name on Tesla's inventions, or Columbus "discovering" the already-populated New World? Could we just say he "popularized" them instead?
Either way, he has my gratitude, and I'm glad he lived a long, full life.
New flavor coming out: "Fierey Fetid Flesh"
He died with a chip on his shoulder.
Sigh...I've forgotten the comment code of honor which requires puns and humorous comments such as yours and the response below by Rev. Sylv Taylor.
Up arrow to you, good sir!
Not sure if that joke was more corny, or cheesy.
NOM NOM NOM.
I will lift a few Doritos in tribute tonight while watching the Dallas Cowboys.
And I will lift a cheeck and crack out some Cool Ranch Dorito farts!
RIP Mr. West! I will always enjoy your chips.
I used to work with interns from Russia who spent a year with us and when one of them was leaving to go back to Russia she was asked what she would miss the most from America. She paused for a long time and said "I will miss Doritos the most." It brought a chuckle to our office, so we gave her several bags to take back with her.
Sing it ........"Bye, Bye, our favorite chip guy. With orange stained fingers, and a bit of red eye. Us good old folks we indulged them while high, are singin' this'll be the day that he died."
"This'll be the day that he died".
Make sure you put a jar or two of salsa in there with him. Even Doritos need to get dipped!
Mexican coke uses real cane sugar and is sold in glass bottles. It's perfectly safe to drink and we get it by the case at Costco. Once you go cane, you never go back!
recycle!
"And the three snacks I admired most. Cheese Whiz, pizza, and Dooorito's. They took the last train for the coast..... The day that Arch West died."
Thanks for all the delicious chips Mr. West! RIP
My turn:
"Goodbye, Mr. Chips"!
excellent! doesn't sound angry though...
wonder if he ever expressed his gratitude to the "snack shack" people he borrowed the idea from. hope so.
So basically he stole the idea........
When I was in school over 40 years ago, Doritos were available in the "ala carte" line. Since I lived across the street from the school, I always went home for lunch, but I could always tell who had eaten Doritos for lunch by their puke-breath. RIP dude...they should throw in some breath mints, too.

Another American dream come true... of course, one stolen from someone else.
Oh well, I love the chips and thank Mr. West for bringing them to the masses.
A fried tortilla is not a patentable item. The snack shack guy stole it from every mother in mexico.
